Slated for availablity late in 2010, the Leaf can reach speeds of up to 90 mph, and will go about 100 miles per charge, according to Nissan.

While the sticker price is not firm, Nissan representatives said they expect it to be in the range of most new cars today, about $26,000 to $33,000.

The Leaf runs on an array of lithium-ion batteries, which are housed beneath the floor in 48 flat modules. They deliver a maximum of 90 KW to the electric motors. This was plenty of power for quick, totally silent acceleration, as we found in a quick test drive around the parking lot.

The car’s batteries can be charged three ways:

• With a fast-charging station that will power the batteries to about 80 percent in half an hour
• Through a 220-volt outlet, in about six to eight hours
• And longer through a standard 110-volt outlet

We judged it to be a sweet ride, one that is so silent that Nissan will probably want to develop some sort of noise generator to alert people and animals that the Leaf is coming.

With its commuter-friendly range, zero emissions and a high-performance lithium-ion power pack, the Leaf looks like the around-town car of the future.

A collaboration among the Rady School of Management at UC San Diego, the Anderson School of Management at UCLA, and Caltech, CACI 2009 is happening today. An opportunity for attendees to expand  their knowledge of clean technology, and to network with industry leaders, this year’s conference is focused on the themes of new energy, transportation and water technologies, and how these will affect the future.

Keynote speakers include San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, Amit Kumar, Ph.D., president and CEO of CombiMatrix Corp., and Peter C. Fusaro, chairman of Global Change Associates.

We were impressed by the enthusiasm of the attendees, and the dedication of the CACI leadership team, led by Marc Potash.

With a focus on providing a broader understanding of the issues facing clean technology, and a real drive to promote clean tech innovation through all aspects of society and the economy, this is a group that is making a positive impact!

We displayed the Ford F150 that we’ve converted to a prototype plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), and fielded a variety of questions from interested students and guests of Connect, sponsor of the event.

Also on hand were ISE Corporation with their hybrid-electric bus, SDG&E with a plug in conversion of a Toyota Prius, an electric motorcycle from Vectrix, a Prius powered by Ni-Zn batteries from Power Genix, and other green technologies.

Many were curious about the performance of Ford F150 vehicle. In a nutshell, the GRRReen conversion prototype:

• Goes from 0 to 40 mph on electric power (and then the gasoline engine takes over)
• Is currently powered by a lead-acid battery pack (with a lithium-ion battery pack in development)
• Has a range of about 40 miles
• Is not available yet, but will be offered to fleets later this year

Following the expo, attendees heard John Addison, author of Save Gas, Save the Planet, discuss recent advances in hybrid automotive technology, biofuels and other fields related to greener driving.

We were there as the sponsor of the Green Stage, which hosted 16 diverse musical acts during the day-long festival, from the West African drummers of Tam Tam Mandingue to the heavy metal madness of (Sic)Monic, and other acts including punk, Latin, country, acoustic, and urban R&B artists.

We debuted our new GRRReen brand, showing off our converted F150, and supporting this event’s commitment to independent thought and sustainable practices.

Scores of people dropped by to see our bench unit, which demonstrates the engineering behind our plug-in hybrid conversion kit; and to talk about how plug-in hybrids can help reduce our reliance on foreign oil, decrease carbon emissions, and save money.

This vibrant day-long festival is now in its third year, and this time will features 85 musical artists, playing rock, rap and everything in between, on eight stages.

A home-grown celebration of independent thinking and action, it’s a fantastic opportunity to come out and see some phenomenal talent as San Diego turns the corner into springtime.

We will be situated near the Green Stage. Tickets are $23 for general admission, $20 for students, seniors and active military, and can be purchased online or at the event.
